La salud en las sociedades regionales españolas: el caso de La Benéfica

Abstract

[Resumo] La casa de salud del Centro Gallego de La Habana, La Benéfica, es utilizada desde sus inicios por las élites de la sociedad del centro gallego como un recurso más de su política interna. Al mismo tiempo, esta institución sanitaria es presentada como elemento legitimador de los proyectos nacionalistas de los gallegos radicados en la capital cubana durante los últimos años del siglo XIX y los inicios del XX. En 1885 algunos socios del Centro Gallego presentaron una moción en la que solicitaban que se gestionara asistencia médica para los asociados enfermos, en una de las casas de salud que existían en la ciudad. Ya para el 1 de agosto de 1895, en plena guerra por lograr la independencia de la Isla del coloniaje español, se inaugura La Quinta de Salud del Centro Gallego de La Habana. Los festejos iniciáticos se convirtieron en una jugada más del proceso de construcción de la cultura gallega que se venía efectuando en la Galicia exterior y que cobraba una fuerza inusitada en Cuba. Además, es de destacar que todas las gestiones relacionadas con la obtención de la quinta de salud para los socios del Centro Gallego fueron recibidas como una muestra del poder de los gallegos de La Habana.

[Abstract] In this paper we want to outline the way in which the health house of the Galician Center of Havana, La Benéfica, was used straight from its beginning by the elites of the Galician Center Society as a resource of internal politics. At the same time, this sanitary institution was used as a legitimating element for the nationalist projects of Galicians established in the Cuban capital during the last years of the XIX century and the beginnings of the XX century. Together with education, health is one of the privileged fronts within the transformations accomplished in the name of the modern world. However, either health or education were quite forgotten in the Cuban way toward modernity. This fact led the Galician Center of Havana to devote and important part of its efforts to supplement this deficiency of the nascent Cuban society. In 1885 some members of the Galician Center presented a proposal requesting medical assistance for its sick members in one of the health houses existing in the city. By the first of august, 1895, still in the middle of the independence war, the Health Villa of the Galician Center of Havana was inaugurated. The initiatory celebrations became one further step in the process for the construction of Galician culture. A process taking place through all external Galicia and which acquired a surprising force in Cuba. Moreover, it must be outlined that all the activities related to the creation of a health villa for the Galician Center associates were received as a display of the power of the Galician in Havana.
