“Spain is Not different”: viajeras románticas anglosajonas en España

Abstract

[Resumen] El trabajo investiga los diversos modos en que se ha representado la imagen de España en los relatos de viajes de escritoras británicas y norteamericanas del siglo XIX inéditos en su traducción hasta la fecha. Frente al anterior acercamiento que estudiaba casi exclusivamente a autores varones se amplía esta perspectiva a discursos alternativos con el objetivo de contrastar la imagen estereotípica proyectada en los textos canónicos frente a los textos de estas autoras que, por una parte, ofrecen una visión que cuestiona ciertos tópicos de la visión anterior del “Spain is different” y que, por otra, reescriben aspectos sobre las relaciones de género, sexuado y discursivo, de la sociedad del XIX. El marco teórico bajo el que se estudia estos textos combina los estudios de género y la teoría postcolonial.

[Abstract] The paper explores nineteenth-century travel narratives by British and American women writers in their visits to Spain, and the way they re-present the image of the country. Most of these works remain unexplored as opposed to the widely studied and translated texts by their male peers. However, their alternative views of the social and cultural realities of Spain serve to contrast and question stereotypical approaches, such as the “Spain is different” cliché, of various male romantic travellers, and, at the same time, rewrite the relationship between concepts such as genre and gender in nineteenth-century societies. The theoretical frame used to examine the narratives combines gender studies and postcolonial theory.
