[Abstract] Introduction: Postpartum depression is a frequent health problem among women between 4 weeks and one year postpartum, with an incidence of between 10 and 13%. Physical exercise has been described as an alternative in the prevention of this mental disorder, but their relationship has not yet been fully established. Objective: To check if there is a relationship between the practice of grupal physical exercise during pregnancy and the risk of suffering postpartum depression. Methodology: This is a quantitative, quasi-experimental research with a design of control group and experimental group, through an intervention proposal with an unsupervised grupal program of physical exercise at the outdoor in pregnant women. In it, women from the health centers of Culleredo (A Coruña) will perform, before giving birth, a moderate-intensity 30-minute walks, 5 days a week for 12 weeks through the Paseo del Burgo. With this intervention, and secondarily to this project, we try to promote health, in this case through physical exercise, to obtain both maternal and fetal health benefits, by reducing the risk of suffering postpartum depression. This association will be studied by analyzing the level of physical exercise of pregnant women, using an accelerometer, in weeks 24-26 and 32-34 of pregnancy. This information will triangulate with data from the clinical history, with a prenatal (in the first consultation) and postnatal (within 40 days postpartum) personal interview and with the results of the EPDS scale, managed in two moments: at 24 weeks of gestation and at 3 months postpartum....

(2014-01-07)

[Abstract] Background: Depression and dementia negatively impact in the quality of life of the elderly, generating at the same time a large social and health spending. Studies carried out in recent years recognize that there is a relationship between depression and dementia. Clarify this relationship will allow to know whether depression is a risk factor for later development of dementia. Method: The bibliography search was conducted in different databases such as Medline, Pscynfo, Isi Web Of Knowledge, Isi Web of Science and PubMed, besides consulting several books. The search included the terms depression, dementia, prevalence and the elderly. The publications and selected studies are comprised between 2000 and 2013. All selected articles are included in scientific journals with Journal Citation Report (JCR) classification. Results: Most of the selected studies support the hypothesis that depression is a risk for developing dementia. In turn, recognize that there is a temporal relationship between the two disorders Only two of the studies found no support that relationship. Conclusions: It is found that there is a relationship between both disorders and that depression is associated with an increased risk of developing dementia....

The effectiveness of the intervention will be determined with the use of two depression questionnaires at the beginning and end of the intervention: Montgomery Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and Scale Hamilton. A descriptive study of the variables included in the study will be done. To determine the association between qualitative variables use the chi square statistic or Mac Nemar test for paired data In addition, a logistic regression analysis will be performed to predict the presence of associated with the evaluation of the response variables.
