O papel das matemáticas na obra de Frei Martín Sarmiento

Abstract

[Resumo] O presente artigo constitúe un primeiro achegamento ó papel das matemáticas na obra de Sarmiento. Para realizar esa análise tomaremos como pretexto unha ampla diserta- ción titulada "Prosigue la enseñanza de la Juventud", inédita, pertencente ao Volumen 5º y último de la Obra de 660 Pliegos, da que se reproduce unha escolma na parte linal deste ar- tigo. Nesta pescuda será de inestimable utilidade o Calálogo de Autores da súa biblioteca, queconsta duns 7500 volumes e 2650 autores e autoras, cilras importantísimas para o seu tempo. Elixiranse uns poucos autores citados polo Irade benedictino, a propósito dalgúns "in- ventos" matemáticos que el consideraba dignos de divulgación, co obxectivo de situalos na ciencia do século XVIII e encadrar nela os coñecementos do Padre Sarmiento.

We have approached the subject lully aware 01 the need to carry out a more in-depth study in the future. In order to develop this analysis, we have used, as a pretexl, a broad unpublished dissertation entitled "Prosigue la enseñanza de la Juventud" (The teaching 01 young people goes on), part 01 Ihe 5th and last volume 01 the Obra de 660 Pliegos, a compilalion 01 which is included al Ihe end 01 this article. The Catalogue 01 Authors 01 Sarmiento's library, consisting 01 roughly 7500 volumes and 2650 authors -slag- gering ligures lor the time- will be 01 invaluable assistance in Ihis research. We will make a selection 01 a lew authors cited by the Benedictine monk, and discuss the mathematical "in- ventions" which he considered lo be worthy 01 dissemination, in order to place them in the Iramework 01 18th century science and relate Ihem to the teachings 01 Father Sarmiento.
