Mirando a Oriente: cristianismo, inculturación y arquitectura en la Indi

Abstract

[Abstract] Fr. Kuriakose Cherupuzhathottathil, member of the Congregation for Oriental Churches, offers in this text a brief history of Christianity in India, which allows us to better understand how Christianity played an important role in the formation of Indian society in general, while other religions contributed to the cultural and artistic evolution of this country. It then traces the fundamental features of the relationship between Christianity and inculturation, based on the book «Christ and Culture» by H. Richard Niebuhr, and finally presents the main buildings that have marked Christian architecture in India, as well as the most recent achievements. The article concludes with a reflection on some works which, in the author’s opinion, open a new avenue for the inculturation of Christianity in the Subcontinent.

[Resumen] El sacerdote indio y miembro de la Congregación para las Iglesias Orientales, Kuriakose Cherupuzhathottathil, ofrece en este texto una breve historia del cristianismo en la India, que permite comprender mejor cómo el cristianismo desempeñó un papel importante en la formación de la sociedad india en general, al tiempo que otras religiones contribuyeron a la evolución cultural y artística de este país. Luego traza los rasgos fundamentales de la relación entre cristianismo e inculturación, apoyándose en el libro «Cristo y la cultura», de H. Richard Niebuhr, para finalmente, exponer los principales edificios que han jalonado la arquitectura cristiana de la India, así como las realizaciones más recientes. El artículo concluye con una reflexión sobre algunas obras que en opinión del autor, abren una nueva vía para la inculturación del cristianismo en el Subcontinente.
