Un siglo de arquitectura religiosa en Filipinas (1921-2021)

Abstract

[Resumen] Tratar de condensar en un solo artículo la arquitectura religiosa producida durante el siglo XX en Filipinas es una tarea ardua. Se trata de un país con noventa millones de fieles católicos, el tercero del mundo, tras Brasil y México, por lo que la cantidad de iglesias recientes es muy alta. Y aunque entre ellas existen obras que se encuentran al nivel de las arquitecturas más celebradas internacionalmente, esa ingente producción contemporánea apenas ha sido estudiada en su conjunto —y mucho menos difundida— ni dentro ni fuera de sus fronteras. En este texto se muestran algunos ejemplos significativos que pretenden ilustrar los tres periodos en los que se ha dividido el siglo XX, cada uno de ellos de unos cuarenta años: la colonia americana (1898-1946), la independencia y posterior dictadura (1946-86) y la época plenamente democrática (1986-2021). Finalmente, se hace una breve referencia a la arquitectura de las demás confesiones cristianas y de otras religiones minoritarias.

[Abstract] Trying to condense in a single article the religious architecture produced during the 20th century in the Philippines is an arduous task. It is a country with ninety million Catholics, the third largest in the world after Brazil and Mexico, so the number of recent churches is very high. And although among them there are works that are at the level of the most internationally celebrated architectures, this enormous contemporary production has hardly been studied as a whole -much less disseminated- either inside or outside its borders. This text shows some significant examples that aim to illustrate the three periods into which the 20th century has been divided, each lasting about forty years: the American colony (1898-1946), independence and subsequent dictatorship (1946-86) and the fully democratic era (1986-2021). Finally, a brief reference is made to the architecture of the other Christian denominations and other minority religions.
