La discreción magnificente. La capilla de la Virgen del Pilar de Miguel Fisac en la catedral de Manila

Abstract

[Resumen] Tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la reconstrucción de Filipinas, el Gobierno de España se implicó con un nuevo renacimiento —el octavo— de la catedral de Manila. Miguel Fisac, de la mano de los Dominicos, recaló en la capital para impartir en la Universidad de Santo Tomás unas conferencias sobre la reconstrucción del país. No obstante, uno de los frutos de su estancia fue su designación como arquitecto asesor de la nueva sede archidiocesana y el compromiso económico español en la financiación de una de las capillas catedralicias. La intervención, diseñada por Miguel Fisac, habla de la magnificencia de la discreción y de la sutileza del programa y la ejecución. A pesar del protagonismo de Fisac en el conjunto catedralicio, la capilla de la Virgen del Pilar por él proyectada entraña el canto elegante y contenido de la huella de la arquitectura española del siglo XX en Manila.

[Abstract] After World War II and the reconstruction of the Philippines, the Spanish government became involved in a new renovation —the eighth— of the Manila Cathedral. Miguel Fisac, with the help of the Dominican Fathers, came to the capital to give lectures on the reconstruction of the country at the University of Santo Tomas. However, one of the products of his stay was his appointment as consulting architect for the new archdiocesan headquarters and the Spanish economic commitment to finance one of the cathedral chapels. The intervention, designed by Miguel Fisac, speaks of the magnificence of discretion and the subtlety of the program and execution. Despite Fisac’s prominence in the cathedral complex, the chapel of the Virgin of Pilar designed by him is the elegant and restrained singing of the imprint of 20th century Spanish architecture in Manila.
