Environmental education in Ecovillages: an ethnography on apprenticeship

Abstract

[Resumo] Este trabalho busca compreender como e em que circunstâncias se aprende em uma Ecovila, como se articulam as propostas de aprendizagem no contexto de cursos, vivências e imersões nestas comunidades, procurando atentar aos elementos de uma espiritualidade New Age que fazem parte desse processo ao produzirem uma relação entre os seres vivos e o sagrado. As Ecovilas são comunidades que objetivam integrar um ambiente com baixo impacto ambiental, agregando design ecológico, Permacultura, energia limpa etc. Nesse contexto, a espiritualidade New Age apresenta características marcantes: interessar-se pelas religiões da imanência - como as tradições orientais -, possuir um forte apelo ao conhecimento e implicar uma forte relação entre a natureza e o sagrado. Assim, aparece relacionada à busca de um modo ambientalmente orientado de habitar o mundo que tende a postular relações mais simétricas entre humanos e outros seres. São apresentados aqui os resultados preliminares de imersão etnográfica em uma Ecovila do Sul do Brasil, que apontam a tendência à aprendizagem por engajamento na prática, com ênfase na presença de elementos da espiritualidade New Age na construção de significados para o mundo.

[Abstract] This work aims to comprehend how and in which circunstamces people learn in an Ecovillage, how apprenticeship proposals happen in the context of courses, experiences and imersions in these communities, seeking to adress the elements of a New Age spirituality that constitute this process once they stablish an specific relation between life beings and the sacred. Ecovillages are communities which goal is to build an ambience with a low environmental impact, aggregating ecological design, permaculture, clean energy etc. In this comtext, the New Age spirituality presents strong carachteristics: interests on imanent religions -as oriental traditions-, a strong appeal to knowledge and an assumed tight relation between the nature and the sacred. Thus, this spirituality is related to the pursuit of a more environmental oriented way of inhabiting the world, that tends to affirm more simetrical relations between human and other beings. There are presented here some preliminary results of an ethnographic imersion in an Ecovillage in South of Brazil, that suggest a tendency to apprentice through practice and engajement emphasizing the presence of new age elements on the construction of meaning to the world.
