[Abstract] Leadership can be the difference between a company failing or succeeding. Leadership research is, therefore, a growing field of study that explores how leaders generate positive outcomes for their organisations. However, not all managers have a positive impact. As different studies show, in certain sectors, such as the hotel industry, so-called ‘destructive leadership’ is a common phenomenon which generates significant negative effects for organisations and their members. The aim of this paper is to examinea selection of leadership styles and to analyse some of their effects on hotel workers, in order to account for the high rates of absenteeism and turnover common in the sector nowadays and which have made it more difficult for hotel companies to attract and retain human capital. The study focuses in particular on the impact of abusive supervision and despotic leadership styles on employee motivation to continue working in the hotel industry. Primary data were collected from a sample of employees currently working in hotels with Q-mark quality certification from the Spanish Institute of Tourism Quality. The results of the study demonstrate the negative influence of these dark leadership styles on motivation to continue working in the hotel sector....

[Abstract] Traineras rowing is a type of rowing where the boats compete in the open sea. This study aims to examine the relationship between the coach’s leadership in fixed seat rowing and the athletes' satisfaction, to which rower participation is added as a covariable. Four teams with a total 66 elite rowers (age: 28.0 ± 5.5 years) and their four coxswains (age: 36.1 ± 1.1 years) took part in this study. Two versions (preferences and perceptions) of the Leadership Scale for Sports-LSS which had been adapted to Spanish were used to evaluate the coxswains' leadership and its relationship with the rowers' satisfaction. The Spanish translation of the Athletic Satisfaction Questionnaire-ASQ was also used. In addition to leadership, which showed statistically significant relationships with the satisfaction factors taken as a whole (p=>.001), and with numerous dimensions of the scale, the number of regatas also showed statistical associations with the athletes’ general satisfaction (p=.018). The data obtained confirm the congruence hypothesis posed in the Multidimensional Model of Leadership (MML) and, in view of the differences in leadership found, the need for future interventions to improve coxswains in this sport....

The study has been focus on two levels of analysis, macro and micro, where it stand out the role of the management and the role of the middle managers in each case. [Resumo] Na actualidade atopámonos nun mundo en constante cambio, onde o principal activo das empresas é o capital humano e estas teñen que saber adaptarse a ambientes altamente cambiantes. Por iso o papel do líder, quen guía e encarna os valores da organización, é crucial. Neste contexto, onde as emocións cada vez teñen maior influenza sobre os demais, a intelixencia emocional, entendida coma a capacidade para identificar, entender e manexar as emocións, nos axudará a enfrontarnos diariamente a desafíos e traballos baixo presión á vez que melloramos as nosas competencias. Isto levaranos a un maior rendemento dos equipos de traballo e por ende a un maior resultado da empresa. O presente traballo valora a importancia da intelixencia emocional no liderado das organizacións e analiza a visión que teñen os empregados do papel que xoga a intelixencia emocional nos seus líderes. Ademais se estuda se os compoñentes relacionados coa intelixencia emocional teñen maior peso que as habilidades técnicas do líder, para alcanzar a excelencia no liderado. Asimesmo, a bibliografía apoia a idea de que en diferentes contextos variaría a importancia dos factores que condicionan a adecuación do liderado (Zenger y Folkman, 2002). A través da revisión bibliográfica afóndase no concepto da intelixencia emocional, seus compoñentes e estilos de liderado. A maiores móstranse estudos que indican a relevancia do líder emocionalmente intelixente na organización. [Abstract] Nowadays we live in a world of constant change, where the main asset of organizations is human capital. Companies need to adapt to this highly changing environment. In this context, the role of the leader is crucial. The leader is a carrier of the organizational values and must lead and guide colleagues effectively. Emotional intelligence is defined as the ability to identify, understand and manage emotions. By applying emotional intelligence, the leader will be more effective influencing colleagues and helping them with daily challenges and work pressure. The organizational outcome will be better teamwork, higher performance and improved business results. This study evaluates the importance of emotional intelligence as a leadership behavior to be applied in organizations, as well as the view of the employees about the role played by emotional intelligence in their organizations. The study also investigates if emotional intelligence and its associated behaviors have higher or lower importance than technical capability for achieving leadership excellence. According to the literature review, the factors that determine the right leadership skills are different depending on the context (Zenger and Folkman, 2002). The literature research completed provides a thorough review of the concept of emotional intelligence, its components and associated leadership styles. The review identified studies which detail the importance of the emotional intelligent leader in their organizations. The study includes a survey completed on employees of one private and one public organization. The survey investigated the relative importance of emotional intelligence in relation to technical capability in order to achieve leadership excellence....
