Consideraciones sobre las representaciones gráficas del profeta Muḥammad en manuscritos cristianos occidentales. Siglos XII-XVI

Abstract

[Resumen] Las iluminaciones de los manuscritos medievales ofrecen las primeras representaciones gráficas del profeta Muḥammad en el Occidente cristiano. Entre fines del siglo XII e inicios del XVI encontramos una notable variedad de caricaturas, retratos y escenas de la biografía de Muḥammad en obras de carácter histórico y enciclopédico, de libros de viajes a tierras de Oriente y de textos poéticos; más raramente en escritos de carácter puramente doctrinal. En este artículo presentamos un panorama de esta rica imaginería, establecemos los principales tipos y comentamos sucintamente las relaciones que median entre las imágenes y los distintos discursos que la ideología cristiana medieval elaboró sobre la figura delProfeta del Islam

[Abstract] The illustrations in medieval manuscripts provide the first graphic depictions of the Prophet Muhammad in the Christian West. Between the late twelfth and the early sixteenth century we find a remarkable variety of cartoons, portraits and scenes from the biography of Muhammad in historical and encyclopedic works,in travel books to Oriental lands and in poetic texts, more rarely in doctrinal writings. In this paper we present an overview of this rich imagery, establishing the main types and briefly discussing their relationship with the different discourses that medieval Christian ideology drawnon the figure of the Prophet.
