Civilizados, corteses y distinguidos. Ritual social y distinción en la modernidad

Abstract

[Resumen] En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX se observan una serie de rituales sociales que legitiman la idea de «distinción», aludiendo a un prestigio que va más allá del orden puramente material, y que tiene que ver con un valor intangible que se puede cifrar en cierta «dignidad de clase». Autores finiseculares como Thorstein Veblen, Gabriel Tarde o Georg Simmel advirtieron tempranamente el carácter casi místico de este fundamento de distinción, que se afirma por oposición a la nueva clase dominante. La burguesía se convertirá en el punto de referencia negativo respecto al cual establecen su canon de distinción dos grupos: la clase nobiliaria y el artista moderno. Para comprender cómo surgen estos rituales y en qué se fundamentan, se analiza el origen y la diferencia entre tres conceptos que intervienen en la naturaleza de estos rituales: «distinción», «civilización» y «cortesía», y los signos que la determinan.

[Abstract] In the second half of the 19th century, a series of social rituals legitimize the idea of «distinction», alluding to a prestige that goes beyond the purely material order and that has to do with an intangible value that can be expressed in a certain «class dignity». End—of—the—century authors such as Thorstein Veblen, Gabriel Tarde or Georg Simmel, noticed early on the almost mystical character of this basis of distinction, sustained in opposition to the new ruling class. The bourgeoisie will become the negative point of reference with respect to which two groups established their canon of distinction: the noble class and the modern artist. To understand how these rituals arise and on what they are based, the origin and difference between three concepts that participate in the nature of these rituals are analyzed: «distinction», «civilization» and «courtesy», and the signs that determine this difference.
