Abstract

[Abstract] Continuous monitoring of pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago, encompassing their actual movement patterns, opinions, and experiences, is fundamental for efficient tourism and territorial management. Knowing firsthand the exact places they visit, their needs, or the problems they encounter allows administrations to optimize services, prevent infrastructure saturation, and adapt strategic planning to the new dynamics of the Jacobean flow. To overcome the limitations of traditional statistics and active GPS tracking in monitoring the Camino de Santiago, an innovative geospatial intelligence system is designed. Based on the Social Sensing and Mobile Crowd Sensing paradigms, the system passively analyzes pilgrims’ digital footprints on the decentralized network Bluesky. The captured text is processed using Large Language Models (LLMs) and Natural Language Processing (NLP). Subsequently, geoparsing algorithms and kinematic validations are applied to project the inferred itineraries onto the official IGN cartography. The result is an interactive dashboard that allows to discover organic route variants, understand the sociocultural context, and audit spatial routes using solely textual data.
