Abstract

[Abstract] This paper aims to examine the phenomenon of syntactic insubordination in spoken English by analysing a selection of insubordinate clauses in the American television series The Office. Following the theoretical framework of Evans (2007), Kaltenböck (2019), and Lastres (2021), this study explores how these constructions, although syntactically incomplete, function as full speech acts thanks to a series of paralinguistic characteristics and contextual clues. The main analysis of this paper extracts samples from a corpus of selected episodes from The Office, more specifically, one episode from each of its nine seasons, where over 60 instances of ICs are identified and categorised into three main types: spontaneous, constructional, and formulaic; and one additional subcategory: semiinsubordinate structures. These examples are later analysed according to their discourse function, which includes requests, complaints, threats, and suggestions, among others. This paper has a qualitative approach that considers syntactic structure and prosodic delivery, combining transcript analysis with audiovisual review to ensure accurate interpretation. The results show that whereas constructional and formulaic ICs typically play more specialised or stylised roles, spontaneous ICs are the most common in natural interactions and frequently take the form of requests or complaints. The evidence compiled emphasises the flexible, context-sensitive nature of grammar in everyday communication and supports the idea that insubordinate constructions are strategic tools necessary in spoken encounters rather than anomalies in the English language. To summarise, this project emphasises the relevance of insubordination as a phenomenon that combines grammar and discourse through pragmatic clues
