Abstract
[Abstract] The article examines Vicente Risco’s use of humour in his satirical novel O porco de pé (‘The pig on its hind legs’) as a means of con- veying a social and moral message with its grotesque distortion of Galician society. She analyses the rhetorical devices used by Risco to project his own attitudes and views on each feature, such as sar- casm, irony, denigration, transposition, contrast, parody, interrup- tion of the flow of the narrative, excessive enumeration, circumlocu- tion, caricature, or ambiguity. Also, she examines his use the image of man-as-pig, so rich in negative associations for the reader, and other images which evoke the comic or the absurd, with which he constructs a framework of devices and figures to describe the social situation portrayed in the novel and with which he unmasks the ide- ology of the bourgeoisie
