Abstract
[Abstract]: In the current context of political and social polarization, it is necessary to delve into the issue of information consumption. This research aims to reflect on how the digital ecosystem is transforming the consumption of political information through an analysis of young people’s behavior, a demographic group characterized by high social media use and significant levels of political abstention. A total of 25 in-depth interviews were conducted with Spanish youths aged 19 to 29 residing in the province of Barcelona (Spain) between 2023 and 2024. A qualitative methodology was applied, distancing itself from a media-centered perspective, which made it possible to gather information on both traditional and new content creators. The results confirm that information consumption is primarily based on a combination of social networks and traditional journalistic media. Although digital environments stand out, since the possibility of personalized searches is perceived as the fastest way to access relevant content, traditional journalistic media are assigned a complementary role. As the main conclusions, it is noted that traditional media still play an important role, despite being strongly criticized, as young people tend to directly associate their content with manipulation, and that personalized recommendations generated by algorithmic formulas align with the type of searches young people conduct. This alignment leads to algorithmic curation being perceived as a useful and rarely questioned tool.
