La traducción de «The Recess» (1783-1785) de Sophia Lee, una novela para «las señoras de alta calidad» españolas a finales del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX

Abstract

[Resumen] A finales del siglo XVIII y principios del XIX el número de lectoras va incrementando paulatinamente y la sociedad española va integrando la figura de la mujer lectora como algo natural. Esta situación se ve reflejada en diversos contextos, siendo el libro uno de los más relevantes. La traducción española de The Recess; or, A Tale of Other Times (1783-1785) de la escritora inglesa Sophia Lee es una clara muestra de ello. Cuando se publicó en Inglaterra esta novela, ya presentaba abundantes características que podían ser del gusto de las lectoras, como la combinación de la historia y lo gótico con la sentimentalidad, junto a la centralidad de las protagonistas femeninas y sus problemáticas. No obstante, mediante el estudio de los elementos paratextuales de las ediciones de la traducción que se publicó en España, se podrá concluir que efectivamente, se pensó en ellas como principales destinatarias del texto.

[Abstract] At the end of the eighteenth century and beginning of the nineteenth century, the number of women readers was gradually increasing and the Spanish society was integrating the figure of the woman as a reader naturally. This situation was perceived in diverse contexts, being books among the most relevant ones. The Spanish translation of The Recess; or, A Tale of Other Times (1783-1785) by the English writer Sophia Lee is a clear proof. When it was published in England this novel comprised abundant features that might be enjoyable for women readers, such as the combination of history, Gothic and sentimentality, and the centrality of female protagonists and their issues. Nevertheless, by means of the study of the paratextual elements of the editions of the Spanish translation, the conclusion is that indeed, women were considered as the main addressees of the text.
