Abstract
[Abstract] The interposition of stressed words between the pre-verbal clitic and the verb was a widely used resource among med ie val Galician writers . From the end of that age onwards, around the 15 th and 16th centur ies , its use diminished considerably among the writers from the period known as the Modern Age , not only in Ga lici a, but also in Portugal. The clearest evidence of this process is the reduction of the quantity and quality of elements which, in the troubadour period, could be placed between the unstressed pronoun and the verbal nu cleu s. In our opini on, the causes of this process of disappearance, which has ]asted until the present day, are due to the following facts: firstly, in Galician the enclitic position of the pronoun is the non-marked position; secondly , these structures are facultative and not prescriptive; thirdly, the potential phonetic difficulty that may arise in sorne constructions; and fina lly, the pressure of Spanish, a language that does not have this kind of morpho-syntactic const ruction
