Abstract
[Abstract] The writings of Rosalía de Castro reach across the whole spectrum of literary genres. Her determination to live as a professional writer is a frequent motif in her work, embodied by both her female characters and the authorial voice behind them. De Castro’s epistolary essay, ‘Las literatas’, offers key insight into the author’s ideas about the role of women writers, her own position as a female Galician writer, and the response of male writers to their female peers. The fictionalised autobiographical narrative of ‘Las literatas’ elevates the text beyond the limits of essay, to create a pioneering study of feminism and an affirmation of de Castro herself as a Galician woman writer.
