Pasado y presente de las cárceles femeninas en España
(Universidade da Coruña, 2005) Almeda, Elisabeth
[Abstract] In Spain, discrimination against women prisoners started and has been historically strengthened since the time of the emergence of the first institutions of women's imprisonment in the XVII century. Slowly but firmly a prison treatment and a disciplinary control has evolved that has defined the subject of imprisoned woman; a woman transgressor not only of penal law but also of social norms that regulate what should be her feminine condition. In Spain this concept came into being almost four centuries ago, at Sor Genoveva de San Jerónimo with las Galeras de Mujeres, and continued at the Casas de Misericordia, at the Casas de Corrección and at Franco’s prisons. The institutions were directed, managed and organised by religious orders with a strong moral drive. Today, institutional practices with religious roots persist in the majority of women’s prisons, under forms that are more modern and in the hands of the State. In Spain the new prisons for women continue to discriminate against women, they are not new model prisons, rather they are a recycled version of the model of the women’s prisons of the past. The purpose of this paper is to briefly analyse the main features of women’s prisons in Spain across the last centuries supporting the argument that female prisons present a series of specific characteristics which suppose significant differences between the penal privation of rights of men and women incarcerated. Much of the argument is based on research conducted by the author into women’s imprisonment in Spain during two periods of time, 1995-1996 and 2000-2001

El enfoque y la tradición sociológica
(Universidade da Coruña, 2005) Ribes Leiva, ALberto J.
[Abstract] In this article, in the line of the studies of sociology, we try to offer some keys for constructing narratives about the past of sociology: the central importance of the relations between the sociological tradition and the "sociological approach" for the constitution of what sociology is, and the demarcation of who can be considered sociologist; also, we try to order the works that are finally accepted as sociological in four boxes, attempting to the centre and the perifery of the discipline.

La crisis del trabajo y la economía flexible
(Universidade da Coruña, 2005) Saavedra Mazariegos, Luis Fernando
[Abstract] The universalization of labour and its social demand as part of modernization is resultig in a deep crisis going a parallel direction to social and economic changes that are being produced the last decades. This article tries to follow the circunstancies that are favouring this situation. Among them the globalization and its strong liberal dimension emphasize their relevance together with the weakness of the State and the expansion of the new technologies. In this frame the desire of unlimited profits, the competence, and the need for low costs have affected in a big way for a large scale the demand of a permanent innovation plunging labour in a crisis of instability, insecurity and precariousness as we hadn´t known since the end of the Second World War.
