ISSN: 1138-58631138-5863http://hdl.handle.net/2183/7842[Abstract] In this paper I attempt to seek out a debate on physical education in Brazilian primary schools between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. After examining sources of a diverse nature, I managed to find records of the emphasis given to the physical education of students as an important way to achieve the moderniza- tion and civilization of the society.
