Abstract

[Abstract]: This paper explores the often-overlooked potential of pilgrimage routes to benefit the rural areas they traverse. Despite their success in attracting visitors, the impact of these routes rarely extends beyond their immediate paths. Through four European pilot studies, this research examines challenges and opportunities for fostering symbiosis between pilgrimage routes and nearby rural heritage. Using qualitative methodologies, including interviews, SWOT analysis and pilot-based experimentation, the study identifies key strategic areas for action as well as a set of recommendations to address cultural heritage promotion, rural revitalization, and stakeholder collaboration. These findings aim to provide actionable insights for enhancing rural heritage tourism and achieving sustainable development.
