dc.description.abstract[Abstract] This essay proposes a sociological approach to wine as a social, cultural, and territorial fact. In contrast to approaches mainly focused on viticulture, oenology, agronomy, chemistry, or tasting, the text argues for the need to interpret wine as a social practice shaped by values, representations, imaginaries, power relations, collective memory, heritage, and identity. Drawing on a theoretical reading of classical and contemporary authors in the social sciences, the essay develops three main axes: the construction of a social theory of wine, its relationship with consumer society, and its territorialities. First, it discusses the contributions of Durkheim, Weber, Berger and Luckmann, Castoriadis, Barthes, and Bourdieu, among others, in order to understand wine as a sign, myth, collective representation, and social imaginary. Second, it analyzes wine consumption through the contributions of Ibáñez, Baudrillard, and Bauman, focusing on the role of marketing, advertising, and commodification in the symbolic transformation of the product. Finally, it explores the connections between wine, landscape, human geography, and territory, highlighting its heritage-based and relational dimensions. The essay concludes that a sociology of wine makes it possible to broaden the analysis of the wine sector beyond its productive dimension by incorporating culture, territory, identity, heritage, diversity, and social change as key categories for interpreting its contemporary transformations. Keywords: sociology of wine; wine culture; territory; heritage; consumption; social imaginaries.
