Abstract

[Abstract]: Service-Learning (SL) is a methodology that combines academic education with community service, reinforcing students’ theoretical knowledge and social responsibility. This work presents an SL experience developed through a Final Degree Project at the Faculty of Computer Science of the University of A Coruña, in collaboration with the Galician Association of People Affected by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (AGAELA). The project involved creating an assistive communication system based on a gaze-controlled tablet interface, integrating artificial intelligence-based eye tracking, customizable communication boards, and voice synthesis. The results showed high satisfaction among patients and caregivers regarding the usability and accessibility of the system, also highlighting a significant increase in motivation and commitment of both the student and participating entities.
