[Abstract] This report provides an in-depth analysis of explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) in the context of education, with a focus on promoting human oversight, ethical governance, and shared responsibility. It is the outcome of the European Digital Education Hub’s squad (online working group) on XAI in education. The report defines and distinguishes key concepts – transparency, interpretability, explainability, and understandability – positioning them along technical and human-centered dimensions essential for building trustworthy AI systems.
