Abstract
[Abstract] In this paper I attempt to seek out a debate on physical education in Brazilian
primary schools between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.
After examining sources of a diverse nature, I managed to find records of the emphasis
given to the physical education of students as an important way to achieve the moderniza-
tion and civilization of the society. Presented from the perspective of a history of the curricu-
lum, this paper aims to discuss a hypothesis, yet to be refined, rather than affirm the suppo-
sitions presented here.
