Abstract
[Abstract] The aim of this article is to summarise ideas from different authors regarding the emer-gence of school hygiene education and educational and health reforms in Portugal in the early twentieth century. The study focuses on the period of the First Portuguese Republic in order to examine the circumstances that gave rise to the social hygiene movement and its appropriation by republican discourse in Portugal. The article also looks at the role played by city authorities as part of the division of responsibilities in relation to education, taking as a case study the activities of the City Council of Oporto during the period 1910-1926
