Abstract
[Abstract] This chapter explores the relationship between economic activity, especially fishing, and the construction of cultural and regional identity in Galicia. It analyses how the decline of fishing in the region threatens not only its economy, but also the social cohesion and sense of belonging of coastal communities. Through the concept of the «Nantucket phenomenon», it exposes the risk of Galicia losing its cultural identity as its fishing activity is replaced by sectors such as tourism. The economic, social and cultural implications of this transformation are discussed and the importance of public policies and social marketing strategies that promote the sustainability of the fishing sector in order to preserve Galicia’s regional identity is underlined.
