Abstract

[Abstract] The collateral consequences of the non-payment of fineshave merited much attention in jurisdictions such as the USA or Australia, yet they are relatively unexplored incountries of the Global South. In this article, we anal-yse Brazil as a case study. Although Brazil has the thirdlargest prison population in the world, its criminal jus-tice system has received little attention. We intend to fillthis gap by addressing the legal framework and prac-tices surrounding the non-payment of fines in a countrywhose draconian policies cause social exclusion andimpede rehabilitation.
