Cincuenta años de la Convención del Patrimonio Mundial: un balance crítico

Abstract

[Resumen] Este año se cumple el quincuagésimo aniversario de la Convención para la Protección del Patrimonio Mundial Cultural y Natural, adoptada el 16 de noviembre de 1972. En sus cincuenta años de existencia, la Convención ha resultado ser uno de los instrumentos normativos más exitosos de la UNESCO, tanto por el número de ratificaciones como por la fama de la designación de patrimonio mundial entre la población general. No obstante, en la actualidad el tratado también se enfrenta a serios desafíos que amenazan su capacidad para alcanzar sus dos objetivos principales: proteger el patrimonio de valor universal excepcional y contribuir a la paz y la seguridad internacionales. Este artículo analiza esos retos abiertos y, al hacerlo, pretende proporcionar una aproximación a la situación de la Convención en 2022.

[Abstract] This year marks the fiftieth anniversary of the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage, adopted on 16 November 1972. In its fifty years of existence, the Convention has proved to be one of UNESCO's most successful standard-setting instruments, both in terms of the number of ratifications and the popularity of the World Heritage designation among the general public. Today, however, the treaty also faces serious challenges that threaten its ability to achieve its two main objectives: protecting heritage of outstanding universal value and contributing to international peace and security. This article analyses these open challenges and, in doing so, aims to provide an approximation of where the Convention stands in 2022.
