Abstract
[Abstract] Commercial fishing is a very important socio-economic activity for Galicia. During the COVID-19 pandemic, international measures were adopted to curb its progress. These measures had a severe impact on seafarers by limiting crew changeover and their repatriation which, added to the challenges of managing the disease on board, would expose fishers to and adverse health and safety circumstance. The present paper aims to describe the health and safety challenges faced by the galician fishing vessels seafarers after the COVID-19 pandemic, ranging from its acting capacity in a similar setting to the high rates of occupational and maritime accidents of the fishing fleet. The final purpose of this review will be assessing different courses of action aimed at improving the labor conditions on board fishing vessels considering objective number 8 of the Sustainable Development Goals.
