El sector balneario gallego desde una perspectiva histórica (1780-1935)

Abstract

[Resumen]: Este trabajo tiene como principal objetivo analizar el origen y transformación histórica de los balnearios gallegos en el conjunto del sector en España desde finales del siglo XVIII hasta la Guerra Civil utilizando nueva evidencia cuantitativa. El análisis pone de manifiesto cómo Galicia supo aprovechar su riqueza natural en aguas mineromedicinales y logró mantener una posición hegemónica durante el periodo objeto de estudio en el sector balneario. Como principales factores impulsores de este desarrollo cabe destacar el marco institucional, el esfuerzo financiero de empresarios y próceres locales y la dualidad de la oferta balnearia gallega, integrada por dos tipos básicos de establecimientos, las villas termales dirigidas al público elitista y los balnearios populares de gran tradición en la región

[Abstract]: The major aim of this research is to analyze the origins and historical transformation of Galician spas (with mineral-medicinal water) within the broader context of the sector in Spain since the late Eighteenth Century until the Spanish Civil War by using new quantitative evidence. The analysis points out how Galicia was successfully to exploit its rich mineral and medicinal waters, and to reach a position of hegemony over the period under research. From a long-term perspective, the key elements to the success of these establishments came in the form of entrepreneurial incentives from local businessmen and politics, the institutional framework and the duality from the point of view of supply with two types of establishments: thermal villages that the social elites visited and popular spas with a long tradition in the region.
