Dominar la naturaleza. Construir, limpiar y acondicionar puertos en el siglo XVIII en España: Pasajes y La Mora

Abstract

[Resumen] Mediante el análisis de los proyectos elaborados sobre dos enclaves costeros de la Península Ibérica, uno en la cornisa cantábrica y otro en la vertiente mediterránea, con el objetivo de optimizar las condiciones que la naturaleza les había conferido y transformarlos en dos estructuras portuarias adaptadas a las necesidades de las embarcaciones del siglo XVIII, reflexionamos sobre la confianza de los ingenieros militares en su aptitud para modificar el espacio, los obstáculos que deberán superar y los logros que todas sus experiencias, informes y cartografía supondrán en el corto plazo de tiempo, aunque en su momento no se vieran coronadas por el éxito. La certidumbre en la capacidad de la ciencia al servicio de los intereses del hombre es un lugar común en el pensamiento de los ingenieros militares ilustrados, lo que en modo alguno equivale a que ignoraran las fronteras que vienen marcadas por el desarrollo tecnológico y las necesidades económicas, que serán, junto a las disensiones entre los promotores, barreras más difíciles de sortear que las que imponía la geografía. [Abstract] By analyzing the projects carried out on two coastal enclaves in the Iberian Peninsula, one on the Cantabrian coast and the other on the Mediterranean side, with the aim of optimizing the conditions that nature had conferred on them and transforming them into two port structures adapted to the needs of eighteenth century ships, we reflect on the confidence of military engineers in their ability to modify space, the obstacles they must overcome and the achievements that all their experiences, reports and cartography will represent in the short period of time, although in their moment was not crowned with success. Certainty in the ability of science to serve human interests is commonplace in the thinking of enlightened military engineers, which in no way amounts to ignoring the borders that are marked by technological development and economic needs, which will be, along with the dissensions among the promoters, more difficult barriers to overcome than those imposed by geography.
