Abstract

[Abstract] This article presents a numerical study of beam-to-open section column joints assembled with long bolts. This type of bolt alters the tension zone of the column. To characterize this effect, this study compares joints assembled with standard bolts—with and without stiffeners—to those assembled with long bolts. Finite element models were developed to analyze the force-displacement behavior of the column’s tension zone. The results show that long bolts enhance both the stiffness and resistance of the joint type studied.
