La sucesión de un cónsul de Francia en Galicia en 1735-1736. La pugna entre el hijo, el canciller y un vicecónsul o excesos, intereses e influencias

Abstract

[Resumen] El nombramiento de un cónsul de Francia era competencia exclusiva de las autoridades francesas, pero los individuos que aspiraban al puesto ejercían su influencia a través de sus redes de contactos en la embajada en la Corte española y en el entorno de la Secretaría de Marina en París. Presentamos el análisis del enfrentamiento para obtener el consulado de Galicia por parte del hijo del cónsul que lo ostentó hasta 1735, que vio su candidatura profundamente marcada por su estilo de vida y sus problemas con la justicia, con el canciller del consulado, que actuó de modo inteligente defendiendo a aquel y supeditando su postulación solo de manera secundaria, y con un antiguo vicecónsul con quien había tenido serias diferencias el cónsul. Todos van a movilizar, unos de manera abierta y otros de modo más reservado, argumentos y personas en su defensa y/o descrédito de los otros. Finalmente, la selección del nuevo cónsul demostró que los intereses de Francia no se supeditaban a las intrigas locales.

[Abstract] The appointment of a consul of France was the exclusive competence of the French authorities, but the individuals who aspired to the position exercised their influence through their networks of contacts in the embassy in the Spanish Court and in the surroundings of the Secretary of the Navy in Paris. We present the analysis of the confrontation to obtain the consulate of Galicia by the son of the consul who held it until 1735, who saw his candidacy deeply marked by his lifestyle and his problems with justice, with the chancellor of the consulate, who acted as intelligently defending him and subjecting his nomination only secondarily, and with a former vice consul with whom the consul had had serious differences. All are going to mobilize, some in an open way and others in a more reserved way, arguments and people in their defense and/or discrediting the others. Finally, the selection of the new consul demonstrated that the interests of France were not subordinated to local intrigues.
