De la Belle Époque a la nueva era del turismo termal: los balnearios en España desde una perspectiva histórica (1874-2015)

Abstract

[Resumen]: Este trabajo pretende reconstruir la evolución histórica del sector balneario en España, una actividad clave para entender los orígenes del turismo, en general, y el desarrollo del turismo de salud, belleza y bienestar, en particular. La utilización de nueva evidencia cuantitativa nos permitirá completar investigaciones previas y analizar cómo el sector pasó por tres claras etapas desde 1874 hasta la actualidad. La primera etapa, conocida como la belle époque balnearia, se caracterizó como un periodo próspero en el que convivieron villas termales de lujo destinadas al veraneo de las elites sociales con establecimientos más modestos asequibles para amplias capas de población. Durante la Guerra Civil y la Dictadura franquista el sector experimentó una profunda crisis en un contexto donde triunfó el turismo de sol y playa. En las últimas décadas del siglo xx el sector renació bajo un nuevo paradigma que ha abierto las puertas a una exitosa etapa del turismo termal.

[Abtract]: This work aims to reconstruct the historical evolution of the spa sector in Spain. It sheds light on the origins of tourism in general and the development of health, beauty and wellbeing tourism in particular. By complementing previous studies with new quantitative research, the article explains how the sector went through three distinct phases from 1874 to the present. The first stage, known as the belle époque, was a prosperous period in which social elites spent their holidays in various luxury resorts, whereas more modest establishments became affordable to people with fewer resources. During the Civil War and the Franco dictatorship, the sector experienced a deep crisis due to the popularity of sun and beach tourism. In the last decades of the twentieth century, the sector was reborn under a new paradigm that has opened the doors to a successful stage of thermal tourism.
