Martín Sarmiento, natural de San Juan de Cerdedo

Abstract

[Resumen] Martín Sarmiento siempre dijo que era gallego de Pontevedra y mientras él vivió nadie afirmó lo contrario. No obstante, hoy se le tiene por natural de Villafranca del Bierzo. En este artículo, después de explicar cómo se gestó la tesis del nacimiento bercia- no, se presenta documentación que parece probar que Sarmiento era efectivamente galle- go, nacido en la localidad de San Juan de Cerdedo.[Abstract] Martín Sarmiento always claimed that he was born in Galicia, and while he was alive, no one ever contested that fact. However, today he is considered to have been origi- nally from Villafranca del Bierzo. In this article we explain the origin of the theory that he was born in Villafranca and present documentation that would seem to prove that Sarmiento was, in fact, Galician, born in the town of San Juan de Cerdedo.
