| dc.description.abstract | [Abstract] This Final Degree Project proposes a deep learning-based generative system to synthesize photorealistic Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images, aiming to mitigate the scarcity of annotated medical data. The synthesis employs a U-Net convolutional architecture conditioned by multi-channel masks, which forces the model to respect the original topology and prevents the generation of visual anomalies. The project includes an exhaustive empirical study on the impact of different loss functions on the generated texture. Additionally, a rigorous independent validation framework is proposed, consisting of the evaluation of the generated images using a layer segmentation model to analyze both the obtained results and the latent activations. Finally, the system tested its generalization capacity by synthesizing continuous tissue over interpolated cuts from consecutive real cuts of the OCT cube, validating its clinical utility to artificially increase the resolution of OCT volumes. The results allow identifying the optimal loss function to achieve the highest perceptual fidelity. Overall, the developed system establishes itself as a robust and scalable tool for generating medical databases, reducing the dependency on costly manual annotations and facilitating the training of future ophthalmic diagnostic algorithms. | |
