dc.description.abstract[Abstract] We consider a model for Koiter linear elastic elliptic shells in contact with a deformable obstacle and we study the convergence of the solution of this model towards the solution of the corresponding model for elastic elliptic membrane shells when the small parameter of the model (thickness) tends to zero. Furthermore, we propose a numerical scheme for this kind of contact problems for Koiter shells and show numerical simulations after implementation by using the free software package FreeFem++.
Acknowledgments We, the authors, are grateful to the editors of the Ciarlet special issue for inviting us to contribute by submitting a paper. Our research benefits from the use of results and methods developed by P.G. Ciarlet in his study of the Mathematical Theory of Shells, a field (among many) that he decisively contributed to create and expand. One can just inspect our bibliography section to see the number of his works that we cite. We hope that this will serve as our humble tribute to him and his work, which continues to inspire us.
