Abstract
[Abstract] This Doctoral Thesis aims to analyze social banking. To this end, it examines the various processes through which sustainability is institutionalized in the financial sector, both in the Spanish case and from a comparative European perspective. This objective responds to the lack of conceptual and analytical consensus surrounding this notion, proposing an interdisciplinary delineation that advances its theoretical and empirical understanding while encompassing the diversity of its historical and contemporary evolution. For this purpose, the thesis develops a multidimensional analytical framework–social, organizational, and institutional–through the articulation of theoretical and methodological approaches drawing on economics and economic sociology, which operationalize the concept in all its complexity. The analysis follows a multi-strategy and multi-method design that integrates qualitative and quantitative techniques. The findings highlight the institutional multiformity of social banking and underscore the role of contextual factors in the way sustainability is implemented and in the outcomes it generates. The theoretical, methodological, and empirical contributions of this work provide an integrative and operational framework for understanding social banking, strengthening its academic and practical relevance in advancing sustainable development.
