| dc.description.abstract | [Abstract] Marcel Duchamp opened his process of the institutional criticism in 1917 when he sends Fountain to the Independent Artists Society in New York. He also began a relationship of dependence with space. What will it mean an urinal situated upside down and signed in a place different to an exhibition space? The Duchamp´s objects, the ready-mades, confront the museum space, questioning their fundamental characteristics but at the same time, they need to provide them a meaning. Moreover, when he works with exhibition spaces, Duchamp began with a deep understanding of their qualities to break with all the standards later. In the museum designed to the Societé Anonyme in the top floor of a building close to the Fifth Avenue in New York, he change the domestic function to an exhibition space, leaving pieces of its last use and breaking its meaning in terms of function in the new space. With the Big Glass, the art object becomes a visual filter that provides new qualities to the space where it is. In the Surrealist Exhibitions in Paris in 1938 and in First Papers of Surrealism in New York in 1942, he modifies the conditions to look at a work of art, complicating its visualisation and he creates an atmosphere in where the spectator becomes the main character with their interaction with the art object. This process has a special moment with the reduction of the exhibition space in a suitcase, the Boîte-en-Valise. The institution loses its place of comfort and it becomes nomad. At the same time, the art object enters into the controversy proposed by Walter Benjamin in The work of art in the time of its technique reproduction. It is interesting in this sense, -and a little mysterious-, the meeting of Duchamp and Benjamin in Paris in 1937. The revolution that Duchamp supposes to the art world is undeniable, but less knew are his works with the exhibition space, where he has manipulated and broken every kind of architectonic conventions. His spatial findings explain some of the innovated aspects in proposals of contemporary architects. | |
