[Abstract] The reputation of organisations can be affected by the spread of fake news and other
forms of disinformation. To protect corporate image,
communication officers need to
be aware of strategies to combat disinformation, such as fact
-
checking, regulation and
media literacy. The aim of this article is to examine the state of the art on this subject
in order to provide a theoretical contextualisa
tion of these strategies
,
present the
current state of the subject, and review the emerging literature on a topic that has not
been extensively explored
. In terms of fact
-
checking, technological developments, such
as artificial intelligence and sophisticat
ed text mining tools, have automated content
analysis and moderation, although human involvement is still necessary to avoid
decontextualisation and the exclusion of hybrid discourses. On the regulatory front,
laws that restrict freedom of expression and i
nformation are always controversial. The
analysis also shows an urgent need for media literacy and more comprehensive
educommunication that includes the whole community of users, young and old alike.
