Abstract
[Abstract] This paper presents the design and construction of a panel devoted to simulating a real residential low voltage installation, as well as its automation by means of smart home devices. Different aspects useful for teaching automation units are presented, together with open future extensions that may be included to the system. The project carried out in the laboratory of our university consisted in the design, the shopping, the integration, and programming of all the elements. These steps were carried out by five fourth year engineering students. Some considerations on their learning and skills acquired are provided, and their opinions are collected. Furthermore, future years laboratory practices are considered in this article, together with tentative seminars on home automation for non-expert users, and different research lines that may take advantage of the use of the panel.
