| es_ES |
dc.description.abstract | [Abstract] Diabetic Macular Edema (DME) is one of the main causes of blindness in developed countries. The degenerative state of the vascular system, caused by diabetes, facilitates leakage of fluids to the different tissues of the body: inflaming and forming edemas in them. When this occurs in macula (retinal tissue responsible for central vision and details) is known as Diabetic Macular Edema (DME). Early detection of DME and its subsequent monitoring is crucial in its treatment, otherwise, this disease can cause irreversible damage (such as tissue ruptures) or requires of expensive and invasive treatments. To detect and monitor it, the most prevalent technique is the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) which allows obtaining non-invasive cross-sectional images of the retinal tissue and its edema. Depending on which layer of macula it is in and its density, these edemas are classified into three categories (from less to greater severity): diffuse retinal thickening (DRT), cystoid macular edema (CME) and serous retinal detachment (SRD). These three types often tend to coexist, and their separation use to be very diffuse. Even with the benefits of use OCT images to identify DME, dealing with the diffuse separation between DME subtypes is still a difficult task for an only clinician. Thanks to computer-aided diagnosis (CAD), a second opinion can be offered based on other experts opinions, which helps to give more objective evaluations, saving time and resources. Keeping in mind these points, in this project an iterative and incremental methodology will be developed to classify the existence of DME and their subtypes in TCO images. To achieve this, state-of-the-art techniques of deep learning will be used, such as convolutional networks or transfer learning, and new ones will be designed based on the problem requirements. | es_ES |
