Conductas de búsqueda de información en Internet en estudiantes universitarios de Comunicación Social en Ecuador

Abstract

[Resumen] Este artículo presenta los resultados de un estudio piloto realizado en la Facultad Ciencias de la Comunicación de una universidad de Ecuador, cuyos objetivos fueron describir las conductas de búsqueda de información en Internet de los estudiantes, evaluar su nivel de conocimiento de las TIC e identificar el factor motivacional que les lleva a realizar investigaciones científicas. Se trata de un estudio de enfoque cuantitativo, con alcance descriptivo y de tipo transversal. En una primera fase, se aplicó un cuestionario a una muestra de 60 alumnos para medir su conocimiento de las TIC y otro para conocer los factores que les motivaban a investigar. Posteriormente, se realizaron sesiones de navegación y búsqueda de información en Internet, con 20 estudiantes voluntarios. El diario del investigador sirvió para tomar apuntes de lo observado mientras los alumnos realizaban las tareas de búsqueda. Los resultados de la investigación muestran que el conocimiento de la mayoría de alumnos sobre las TIC es básico o intermedio. El factor que predomina como motivación para investigar es el de formar un hábito personal y contribuir a una cultura de investigación en su entorno. Sobre las conductas de búsqueda de los estudiantes se centran exclusivamente en el acceso a la información sin evaluar su calidad y su origen. Hacen búsquedas simples y como criterio emplean el lenguaje natural. Escogen los tres primeros resultados que les reporta el buscador y copian los textos textualmente obviando el proceso de referenciado. No realizan procesos de análisis o síntesis

[Abstract] This article presents the results of a study carried out at the Faculty of Communication Sciences at the University of Ecuador, whose objectives were to describe the behavior of the students when making internet searches, to evaluate their level of knowledge in TICs and to identify the motivational factor that leads them to carry scientific investigations. This is a quantitative approach study, with a descriptive and cross-sectional scope (Hernández et al, 2015). In a first phase, a survey was applied to a sample of 60 students to measure their ICT knowledge and to determinate the factors that motivated them to investigate. Afterwards, Internet browsing and information search sessions were conducted with 20 volunteer students. The researcher's diary served to take note of what was observed while the students performed the search tasks. Research results showed that the majority of students' knowledge about ICT is basic or intermediate. The factor that predominates as motivation to investigate is to form a personal habit and to contribute to a research culture in its environment. On student search behaviors, it was found that they focus exclusively on access to information without assessing its quality and origin. They perform simple searches and as a criterion they use natural language; then choose the first three results that are meet by the search engine and copy the texts textually bypassing the referencing process. They do not perform processes of analysis or synthesis
