A tradución como proxección de Galicia no exterior

Abstract

[Resumo] Este artigo é o resultado dun estudo sobre a situación dos libros da literatura galega publicados en inglés. Son, polo menos, 32 libros galegos (títulos individuais e escolmas) publicados en inglés, principalmente no Reino Unido. Inténtase indagar en quen os publica e por que, e na cantidade de exemplares que se venderon. Sublíñase o feito de que son os editores quen deciden qué libro se vai publicar, e non os tradutores, e que os editores teñen interese sobre todo na boa literatura e moito menos na lingua en que foi escrita. Dáselle especial atención a algunhas das editoriais comerciais (Harvill Secker, Everyman, Arcadia, Shearsman Books e Planet) e non tanto ás editoriais universitarias ou pertencentes a organizacións culturais dentro de Galicia.

[Abstract] This is a study of the number of books of Galician literature published in English. There are at least 32 Galician books (single titles and anthologies) published in English, mainly in the United Kingdom. Who publishes them and why? How many copies have been sold? Emphasis is given to the fact that it is the publishers who decide which book is going to be published, and not the translators themselves. Also, editors are interested above all in good literature rather than the language in which it was written. Special attention is paid to some of the commercial publishers (Harvill Secker, Everyman, Arcadia, Shearsman Books and Planet) rather than to university presses or cultural institutions in Galicia.
