dc.description.abstract[Abstract] In this paper 133 place-names from Cedeira, a small area on the galician north-west coast, were taken directly from the fishermen’s local speech. All the place-names were recorded in their original pronunciation as they are commonly used by the locals without applying any normative filter. The study is divided into two parts. In the first part the place-names are registered taking into account their spelling and phonetic transcription as well as their classification in terms of morphological, semantic and socio-linguistic analyses. In the second part, an etymological study of each place-name is made. They are classified into three diachronic-linguistic categories: included in category one are those of Latin origin which were introduced before the formation of Galician language. In category two, those introduced during the formation of Romance languages in medieval times. Those of Galician origin and those taken from Spanish or influenced by this language are classified as belonging to the third category.es_ES
