Análisis comparado de dos elites brigantinas: la trayectoria empresarial de los Núñez y los Etcheverría desde una perspectiva histórica (c. 1717-1955)

Abstract

[Resumen]: Este artículo persigue como principal objetivo el estudio de la trayectoria empresarial de dos familias brigantinas, Etcheverría y Núñez, representativas de las transformaciones económicas experimentadas por la comarca durante gran parte de la época contemporánea. Aunque su especialización productiva discurrió por rutas diferentes en el largo plazo, ambas firmas compartieron dos características básicas: la combinación de actividades bancarias con negocios comerciales y fabriles y el carácter familiar de sus empresas. El trabajo analiza sus principales estrategias inversoras y su capacidad para afrontar las crecientes exigencias financieras y productivas de una economía en proceso de desarrollo. Como resultado de este proceso, los Etcheverría lograron mantener su independencia y consolidar sus negocios bancarios, mientras que las empresas punteras de la familia Núñez fueron absorbidas por la expansión de otros grupos empresariales de mayor tamaño.

[Abstract]: The main objective of this article is to analyse the business history of two entrepreneurial groups working in Betanzos, Etcheverría and Nuñez. The core of this study consists on the contribution of those economic agents to the process of regional economic development during much of the contemporary age. While their productive specialization showed many differences in the long term, both groups shared two basic characteristics: on the one hand, the combination of banking activities with commerce and manufactures and, on the other hand, the family nature of their business. The paper also analyzes the dynamics of their investment strategies and the capacity of the owners to adequately confront the challenges derived from the economic development. As a result of this process, the Etcheverría family managed to maintain the enterpreneurial independence and to consolidate the banking business, while the leading companies of the Nuñez family were absorbed by the expansion of other greater business groups.
