[Abstract]: The main objective of this article is to analyse the business history of two entrepreneurial groups
working in Betanzos, Etcheverría and Nuñez. The core of this study consists on the contribution of
those economic agents to the process of regional economic development during much of the
contemporary age. While their productive specialization showed many differences in the long term,
both groups shared two basic characteristics: on the one hand, the combination of banking activities
with commerce and manufactures and, on the other hand, the family nature of their business. The
paper also analyzes the dynamics of their investment strategies and the capacity of the owners to
adequately confront the challenges derived from the economic development. As a result of this
process, the Etcheverría family managed to maintain the enterpreneurial independence and to
consolidate the banking business, while the leading companies of the Nuñez family were absorbed by
the expansion of other greater business groups.
