Abstract

[Abstract] The pseudo-Hildegardian prophecy which begins with the words Insurgent gentes is a well known pamphlet allegedly written in the context of the thirteenth-century antimendicant polemic led by William of Saint-Amour in the Paris University. It has been edited many times, but always in its short version. There is another longer version which has remained unedited until now. Among other differences, this last contains passages which are closely related (in form and meaning) to William of Saint-Amour’s works, specially to the Tractatus breuis de periculis nouissimorum temporum and the Collectiones catholice et canonice scripture. This article presents the first edition of the longer version of Insurgent gentes with its translation. The analysis of this version of the prophecy allows us to attribute its authorship to William of Saint-Amour himself and to consider it as the original version.
